About The Dan Hicks

Hicks was born in Arkansas and grew up close to San Francisco. The music bug bit him when he was in school and he began his musical career by playing the drums when he was in grade school. Soon he was playing the snare drum in the marching band and was good enough to start playing gigs at the age of fourteen with local dance bands. This would be a venue he would often return to later on in his career.

While attending high school, Hicks was bitten by a different bug, the radio bug and he began doing a small, regular radio spot before embarking on a degree in broadcasting in college. However that music bug wouldn't stay down long and soon Hicks had picked up the guitar and learned how to make is sing. He began playing singing on the local folk scene before he joined a band called The Charlatans as a drummer. This was a band with a terrific concept that was on the scene way before similar acts like Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead. However the band had very little focus- the biggest gig they ever landed was playing to the psychedelic grooves that had hit the dance halls at the time.

Meanwhile, Hicks had got together his own side project, an acoustic combo with female backing that often opened for The Charlatans. The act was called Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks and the group showed so much promise that Hicks left The Charlatans to focus on the Licks. His hard work paid off with a recording contract in 1969, which was followed by some of the band's best work. However internal and external problems were reaching a pinnacle and right when the band was at its best, Hicks dissolved it.

Hicks later embarked on a solo career and only went back to working with a group in 1980 when he toured with a band called the Acoustic Warriors. In 1998, Hicks signed up for a brand new contract and decided to bring the sound of the Licks back. The result was an album that was a runaway hit, both commercially and critically. Time.Com listed it under the top ten CDs of 2000.
