Wayans was born in 1960 in New York City, one of many siblings that would go on to make a mark in the movie and television industry. His siblings include Keenan Ivory, Shawn, Marlon and Kim Wayans. The Wayans grew up in poverty, with their mother doing her best to make ends meet. Damon had a clubfoot and had to wear a special shoe, which was memorably brought out during a Wayans family appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Damon began his career as a stand-up comic in 1982 and after working the clubs relentlessly, he was finally able to get an opening at Saturday Night Live. Despite being a featured performer, Wayans found himself getting increasingly frustrated with the show as his sketches kept getting passed up during consideration. He was ultimately fired after he played the character of a straight cop as a flamboyant gay.

Wayans next hit the television screen with the family effort and Emmy-nominated In Living Color which ran from 1990 to 1992. The program was a boost to a number of current big names like Jennifer Lopez, who was one of the Fly Girl dancers and Jim Carrey. Damon was able to exercise a lot more of his creativity here and as a result, produced a number of unforgettable characters. One was the flamboyant gay couple, which Damon probably built from his representation of the gay cop in SNL. He is also famous for his portrayal of Homey the Clown and his very famous catch phrase 'Homey don't play dat.'

Wayans' next big break came with the show My Wife and Kids, which ran from 2001 to 2005 and gained popularity on an international scale. Wayans' character of a sarcastic, quick-witted father gained a lot of popularity. The show itself was also seen as a landmark of sorts, viewed by many as being a modern-day version of The Cosby Show. However, there are number of marked differences- for example the parents are not successful doctors and lawyers. Wayans' character in particular worked from the bottom up to build his business. Also a number of risky topics like teen pregnancy that wouldn't have been touched on The Cosby Show were featured on My Wife and Kids.
