About Da Brat

Da Brat was born Shawntae Harris in 1974 in Chicago and broke out onto the rap scene in 1990. A protégé of Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat made a huge dent in the music scene, becoming the first female solo rapper to go platinum. Her image was brash and completely in-your-face. With baggy cargo pants, a baseball cap and nose ring, Da Brat was initially known for her excessive profanity and vulgarity. Some compared her to MC Lyte, who was also known for her unrestrained profanity. It is interesting to note that both MC Lyte and Da Brat would go on to work together in the movie Civil Brand.

After garnering a fair amount of success with her single 'Funkdafied' taken from her debut album, Da Brat began to play it low key and was largely absent from the scene for a number of years, appearing every so often on a number of collaborative numbers. Her solo work took a definite back seat at the time. Da Brat would appear in a remix of Mariah Carey's song 'Always Be My Baby' and on the remix of 'Not Tonight' by L'il Kim. In 1998 she appeared on the Missy Elliot track 'Sock it To Me' and later did a collaboration with TLC's T-Boz called 'Ghetto Love' which went on to be a hit. Da Brat would also appear on two more Mariah Carey remixes for 'Heartbreaker' and 'I Still Believe' as well as on a remix of Brandy's hit number 'You Don't Know Me (Like You Used To)'.

In 2000, Da Brat released her third album which was called Unrestricted. The effort did moderately well, churning out a few decent hits like 'That's What I'm Looking For' and "What Chu Like'. However many critics complained that the album lacked the bite of Da Brat's previous efforts. The reason for this was quite simple. Da Brat had undergone an image change, discarding her previous gangsta girl persona for a more sexed up look. This image change was boosted by a steamy video featuring Tyrese for the number 'What Chu Like' and a nipple incident that occurred on MTV's Total Request Live. Recently she appeared in the song 'I Think They Like Me' with Dem Franchize Boyz, Bow Wow and Dupri.
