Coldplay

Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland made a chance meeting during orientation in 1996 before their freshman year at the University College London blossom into a Coldplay, an internationally-acclaimed band that now sells tickets and albums throughout the world. The first version of Coldplay was Pectoralz a year later when they recruited bassist Guy Berryman. The next move was to add its last member, drummer Will Champion in January 1998. >> More alt

The group, then called Starfish, adopted the name Coldplay after a friend of theirs, Ti Rice-Oxley, dropped the name because it sounded too depressing. The group quickly went from final examinations to recording an album with the label Parlophone. Before the melodic lyrics of Coldplay soothed over its fan base and sold tickets to concerts, the group had some tensions to work out. During the sessions for the record Chris Martin went on a drinking binge and kicked out Champion. As the guilt overcame Martin, Coldplay decided to split the profits evenly and agreed to boot any member of the group doing hard drugs.

Coldplay, with renewed vigor and intact after pressure had nearly ripped the band apart, finished their third EP, The Blue Room. “Bigger Stronger” received significant play on Radio 1 in Britain and the band went back to work on their debut full-length album. Coldplay needed a hit. They had released three EPs and they lacked any big hits. All that changed while they were on the Carling Tour in 2000. The singles “Shiver” and “Yellow” changed them from supporting acts on tickets to a headlining act.

Coldplay’s Parachutes debuted at number one on the UK charts and found similar success over the Atlantic in America. After a significant schedule touring and selling tickets in support of their debut album, they received the 2002 Grammy for Best Alternative Music. Coldplay quickly went back to the studio to build on the success and record A Rush of Blood to the Head.

The album was released in August 2002 and Coldplay continued to flourish. “In My Place}, “Clocks”, and “The Scientist” hit the airwaves and sent fans to the box offices demanding tickets to the accompanying tour. After a year long schedule on the road in five continents and another bonanza at the Grammy’s, Coldplay rested in 2004.

They returned in 2005 with X&Y. Although the album received less than favorable reviews from the critics, it became their best selling release to date. “Speed of Sound”, “Fix You”, and “Talk” met with support from enamored fans, who again rushed the box offices for tickets when Coldplay announced their tour schedule. Since completing the arduous tour in 2006, Coldplay returned to the studios to work on their fourth album.

2008 Tour

More than a year in the making, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends will be released on June 17, 2008. Coldplay’s latest album comes with help from producers Brian Eno and Timbaland. The album is rumored to have a strong Hispanic influence. The first single released from the album, “Violet Hill” was released in late April.

The Viva LA Vida World Tour will start with two free shows in June before an almost 50-city schedule over North America begins. The tour will go until November before heading over to Europe.
