About C.J. Chenier
Chenier was born in Texas and spent much of his youth soaking in the styles of soul, Motown, jazz and funk. After getting a scholarship and studying music, Chenier was taught the complete ropes of the music business and the band from his father. After his father passed away, Chenier and the band recorded his debut album. Chenier also made a number of solo albums with other recording companies and came up with his most challenging album yet in 2005 with an album that was inspired by the disaster he had seen during Hurricane Katrina. Chenier has also played extensively all over America and worked with recording artists such as Paul Simon and Ringo Starr.
Some conservative musical tastes may not consider Chenier to be a true Zydeco musician and he has often come under fire for throwing on R&B swing on his music to make it appeal to a wider audience. This however is more of an innovation and a sign that the genre is growing and expanding. Chenier has always made it clear that the music he plays is his own music and is not in any way an imitation of his father's work. The Zydeco core in Chenier's music is unmistakable but his early influences also play a huge role in the music he makes.
Despite the heavy tones of Chenier's latest album, he has always been a musician that could make people dance. To Chenier, Zydeco is "happy music" and audience members have always had a case of happy feet during Chenier's live gigs. Apart from being a crowd pleaser, Chenier infuses fast rhythmic grooves, soulful riffs, rock, jazz and of course a liberal dash of Zydeco to get the groove moving.
Chenier's latest effort, which he began to work on in 2005, is backed by the band Tarbox Ramblers and is in essence his first solo effort as a singer and songwriter. The material is a mix of starkly sad pieces and rousing foot stompers. Chenier also plans to tour extensively for the next two years.
