Bette Midler

Bette Davis Midler was in Honolulu, and is a singer, actress and comedienne, also known as The Divine Miss M to her fans. She is named after actress Bette Davis; her family was one of only a few Jewish families in a mainly Asian neighborhood. She was a drama major at the University of Hawaii, but was there for only 3 semesters; she earned money playing a seasick passenger in the movie “Hawaii.” She moved to New York in 1965 using the money she received for playing an extra. She landed her first professional part in Tom Eyen’s Off-Off-Broadway plays, Miss Nefertiti Regrets and Cinderella Revisited, which was a children’s play during the day, but at night, it was an adult show. She got her first movie role in 1986 in Down and Out in Beverly Hills, which started a successful career in comedy; she also starred in other late 80’s comedies, like Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune and Big Business. She starred in the drama Beaches in 1988 as C.C. Bloom; and loaned her voice to Georgette, an animated poodle in Disney’s Oliver & Company. Her version of “From a Distance” is one of her more popular songs and got her a Grammy; her songs “Wind beneath My Wings” and “The Rose” were selected to be included in “The 100 Years of the Greatest Songs” by the American Film Institute in 2004. Her other films include, Scenes from a Mall, For the Boys, Hocus Pocus, The First Wives Club and The Stepford Wives. She has guest-starred on The Simpsons episode, “Krusty Gets Kancelled,” a Seinfeld episode entitled “The Understudy” and on The Nanny in the episode entitled “You Bette Your Life.” She has received 4 Grammys, an Emmy and a Tony Award, and has also been nominated for 2 Academy Awards. Currently, she is performing a new concert show, The Showgirl Must Go On, live 5 nights a week at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. The show debuted February 20, 2008.
