Peters was born in Queens, New York in 1943 and hit the big screen at the tender age of three, earning her Equity Card when she was just nine. She hit the theater stages in her teens, appearing as an understudy for Dainty June in Gypsy, a play she would later win a Tony award nomination for in 2003. Peters would go on to star in many musicals and other theater productions and soon the award nominations and wins were flowing in at a steady pace. She won her very first award, the Theater World Award in 1968 and quickly followed that with her very first Drama Desk award for her work in Dames at Sea. Tony nominations followed for her work in On the Town, Sunday in the Park with George and Mack and Mabel and a Tony and Golden Globe win followed for her work in Song and Dance and Pennies from Heaven respectively.

Peters has since established as one of the Fabulous Four, the quartet of the world's greatest living divas to grace the musical stage, along with such greats as Patti LuPone, Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley. Peters has also been a sensation on the small screen and in Hollywood, working alongside movie giants like Mia Farrow, Steve Martin, Clint Eastwood and Carol Burnett in films like The Jerk, Silent Movie, Annie, Alice and Impromptu. Her extensive work has also won her a coveted star on the Hollywood walk of Fame. But the lady's talent doesn't end there- she has also featured on a number of Grammy-winning Broadway albums and even put up the exclusive Bernadette Peters in Concert to benefit one of her leading causes, Gay Men's Health Crisis. The concert has since been released on DVD.
