Babyshambles came into being when Pete Doherty of the Libertines left the group in order to form his own band. The main reason for this was the group's refusal to deal with Doherty's drug problem though Doherty claims there were other reasons for his departure. After a number of changes in the line up, the band was somewhat stabilized in 2004 with Drew McConnell playing bass, Gemma Clarke on drums, Doherty on vocals and Patrick Walden on guitar. Clarke would quit the band in 2005 and be replaced by Adam Ficek while Walden would also leave the band and rejoin again in 2006. Much of the shift in line up has been the result of Doherty's drug use and his unpredictability on stage and in the studio.

With so much loaded against them, it was widely felt that Babyshambles would not last very long, especially with a volatile and unpredictable member like Doherty at the helm. But the band went on to prove everyone wrong. Their first single was released in 2004 and since less than 1000 copies were released, the album is being sold for almost fifty pounds on internet auction sites. Their UK tour was sold out and met with wide critical acclaim and commercial success. Their piece de résistance remains their debut album (which many consider the production itself to be an amazing thing) which was leaked onto the internet a month before release and unleashed two number one singles onto the charts. The album was produced by Mick Jones, former guitarist for The Clash and the title of the album refers to the idyllic, fictional England of William Blake. In truth, the album was put together in the spare minutes between Doherty's stints in jail and rehab but there is a raw power and inspiration that runs through all of the songs. Kate Moss has provided background vocals while some of the lyrics were provided by one of Doherty's old jail inmates.
