Avant was discovered after their single was heard on a local music hour on Q97.9. The members of the group all quit their other jobs to focus on their music.
Avant accepted that they were truly working musicians in 1981, when the group's first fan club was started by Sharon Slatter. After starting out with a handful of members in Louisville, the club took off exponentially, growing to over two thousand in just a few months.
