A combination of bolero and flamenco, as well as cumbia, vallenato and other Colombian folk music is what you get to hear in Aterciopelados' music. This band's music is the answer to all those music lovers, who can't do without their hip-hop and alternative rock, but at the same time enjoy the soulful, folkloric roots of Latin Music. The band was nominated for the Grammy awards in 1997 and 1998.
Vocalist guitarist Andrea Echeverri and bassist/arranger Hector Buitrago, came together to form Aterciopelados, the duo had been working together long back in the early '90s as "Delia y los Aminoacidos". Two individuals from different genre, Buitrago had a hardcore rock background, and was heading a group called La Pesitilencia, while Echeverri had been drawn into the fledgling scene through art school friends to create magic in their music. The hot spot of Bogota, the only rock club is owned by the duo.
Con El Corazon en la Mano, their maiden album was full of crashing, distorted guitars and a punishing punk drumbeat. Their second album El Dorado, has seen them evolve as musicians. The album has traditional llanera rhythms of the Colombian countryside as well as the flamenco-bolero sound. It was an experience which helped them to compose and develop new material. "Bolero Falaz" their very popular song has a rock-ballad feel, and the song also highlights Andrea's powerful seductive voice. The song was featured on MTV Latino and made them an overnight sensation all over Latin America.
Andrea admits to being influenced by her mother, who sang boleros, rancheras, and tangos, and the great legends of nueva cancio´n, Iike Juan Manuel Serrat, Mercedes Sosa, and Pablo Milanes.
Music guitarist Phil Manzanera. With the songs "Cosita Seria", "Chica Dificil", and "Baracunatana" Andrea teases macho men. The songs went on to become the signature tunes of the third album. After the release of the album the band set off on a tour in the U.S. and they were also featured in MTV Unplugged in early 1997.
A year later the album Caribe Atomico was recorded in Manhattan and guitarists Arto Lindsay and Marc Ribot were part of the album. Their fifth album Gozo Poderoso is melodic as well as moody and is kind of declaration for the vibrantly eclectic Latin alternative movement. The album was recorded in Bogota` and was produced by Hector Buitrago himself. This helped them create their own true sound.
The duo have etched out a solo career too. Andrea's self-titled Andrea Echeverri and Hector's Conector are their solo albums but both of them were equally involved in the other's solo project. They released a new album in 2006
