About Amanda Palmer

Amanda Palmer was born on April 30, 1976. She is the lead singer and pianist of the "Brechtian punk cabaret" duo The Dresden Dolls. Palmer spent her childhood in Lexington, Massachusetts. She attended Lexington High School, where she was heavily engaged in the drama department. She received her B.A. from Wesleyan University. Her stage performances were based on the works of the Legendary Pink Dots.

Palmer met drummer Brian Viglione in October 2000, and together they formed the Dresden Dolls. Before she joined the Dresden Dolls she was in a band called "Amanda Palmer and the Void". In order to expand her performance experiences, Palmer began inviting Lexington High School students to perform drama pieces at her live shows. Presently, the Dirty Business Brigade, a troupe of seasoned and new artists, perform at almost every gig. The invited costumed characters mix with the crowd before and during the show, and veteran groups sometimes join in with a choreographed stage act. Life-sized puppets, coin-operated boys, living statues, and other under groundlings greet fans while circus and mockery draw the audience into the Dolls' music, making a participatory ambiance which allows the audience to experience various types of art simultaneously.

The Dresden Dolls Companion, was published, with "words, music & artwork" by Amanda Palmer, in 2006. In it she has brought out the history of the album The Dresden Dolls and of the duo, as well as a partial life history. The book also comprises the lyrics, sheet music, and notes on each song in the album, all written by her. Also in 2006, the Boston Globe declared her the most stylish woman in Boston. The same year she was listed in Blender Magazine's hottest women of rock.

The Dresden Dolls is an incredible band. Amanda's vocals are sensitive and emotional rather than candied. Her critical, psychotic lyrics are startlingly true, but like abstract art, she never comes out and tells you precisely what she means, rather she makes you think about it. To really interpret this band you can't take her lyrics at par value, you have to analyze everything she says because of all of the elusive nuances and significations hidden within her sarcastic mockery. This is one of the most popular bands. Amanda has begun recording for a new solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer, to be released in Spring 2008.
