About The Alicia Keys

The bright student turned down an offer from Columbia University to pursue a music career. Keys immediately singed with Columbia Records, but was dropped soon after in 1997. Struggling, Alicia met Clive Davis and was signed to Arista Records. Though the label disbanded, she followed Davis to his new label J Records. It was there that talented singer songwriter first found success.

There, Keys recorded the songs “Rock with U” and “Rear View Mirror” for movie soundtracks. After being featured on several soundtracks, Alicia released her debut album, Songs in A Minor.

The album became a hit immediately, selling 50,000 copies in the first day and 235,000 records in the first week. Keys’ album would go on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide and win Grammy Awards in 2002 for “Song of the Year”, “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance”, and “Best R&B Song”. Alicia’s debut revealed her as a singer influenced by hip hop and neo soul, being among the first of the generation to find inspiration from Lauryn Hill.

Her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, was released in December 2003 and once again received positive critical reviews and tremendous commercial success. The album debuted at number one and went on to sell 9 million units. “You Don’t Know My Name” and “If I Ain’t Got You” each reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Diary” reached the top ten.

Keys furthered her rapidly growing success by winning the Grammy for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance”, “Best R&B Song”, “Best R&B Album”, and “Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals”. Alicia, at the age of 24, had established herself as one of the preeminent R&B artists of her generation.

She hit the top of the charts again in 2004 with the release of her MTV Unplugged album. The record debuted at number one and again resulted in multiple Grammy Awards. She began work o another studio album in late 2006 and released As I Am in November of 2007. Alicia continued her trend of debuting at number one, with first week record sales of 742,000 copies.

Her single “No One” debuted at number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100, and would reach number one for her second number one hit of her career. The 2008 Grammy’s were fruitful again, as she won “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance” and Best R&B Song” for the single.

She has extended her career to acting as well as MUSIC She made her screen debut in Mission to Mars as the voice of Mommy Martian and starred in a loaded ensemble cast in Smokin’ Aces.
