The musician’s entire family seems to be musically inclined. Brothers Coke and Pete are percussionists and Sheila E is his niece. Alejandro started as a first-wave punk rock artist in the ‘70s in San Francisco, but moved to Austin, Texas and discovered alternative country and root rock. At first playing with buddies Chip and Tony Kinman in Rank and File, Escovedo eventually moved out on his own. He released his first solo album in 1992 and soon after became a draw for those looking for tickets to the little known country rock genre.
Alejandro Escovedo has since become crowned the “Artist of the Year” by No Depression magazine, an alternative country publication, and has recorded eight more albums. In 2003 he fell ill due to his battle with Hepatitis-C. Friends and family arranged a benefit concert and sold tickets to raise money to help the singer/songwriter pay for his escalating medical bills.
Alejandro Escovedo first worked with the punk rock group The Nuns, along with Delphine Neid, Jennifer Miro, and Jeff Olener, in San Francisco, California. After Escovedo quit the band, they recorded an album on Posh Boy Records, but it did not see much commercial success.
He had become such a force in the music industry that Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Ian Hunter, and The Jayhawks turned out to perform. A lineup that would sell out of tickets on most bills helped him overcome his illness and by 2005 he was disease free.
