About Al Green

After leaving the group, he started his own group in high school called Al Greene & the Creations, which then became Al Greene & the Soul Mates in 1967. Playing on an independent label started by two of the Creations, Curtis Rodgers and Palmer James, Hot Line Music Journal, the group released its first single, “Back Up Train”. The song was a hit on the R&B Charts, but the debut album that followed failed to succeed commercially.

The turning point in Al Green’s career came in 1969 when the 23-year-old met Willie Mitchell. Originally hired as a vocalist for Texas show by Mitchell, he was so impressive that Mitchell signed him onto his label, Memphis’ Hi Records. Mitchell handled the musical arrangements, engineering, and producing of Green’s first record with the new label, Green Is Blues. The album was only a moderate success, but it effectively displayed Al’s powerful, expressive voice. The next album, Al Green Gets Next to You, launched his career. With four gold singles, the singer began to develop as a songwriter as well.

Let’s Stay Together and I’m Still in Love With You were both huge albums released in 1972 that hit a note with fans and critics, landing at number one on the R&B charts. In fact, for the next three years Green released four more number albums on the R&B charts. The hits brought him fame and sold plenty of tickets as a major soul artist. During that time, he had his bout with tragedy. On October 18, 1974, a longtime friend of Al suffered a nervous breakdown which caused her to attack the singer with boiling hot grits and then commit suicide.

The event left Green with third degree burns on his back, stomach, and arms and brought him closer to God. Al moved from soul music to gospel music. His first gospel album, The Lord Will Make a Way began a long rode to commercial and critical success as he had to wait three years and four albums before he returned to a chart position. Green made it though, and he would soon be selling tickets and albums to gospel fans like he did once to soul and R&B fans.

Eventually, the singer returned to R&B. His first non-religious album in years came in 1995. Your Heart’s In Good Hands pleased the critics but failed to make the conversion to a commercial hit. Al Green has since become a respected force again in R&B, even winning the Grammy for Life time Achievement in 2002. He continues to sell tickets and albums, with a busy schedule that splits his time between concerts and preaching.
