The Troy Trojans are the sports teams of Troy University, and they began playing in the NCAA's Division I-A in 2001, became a football only member of the Sun Belt Conference in 2004, and joined that conference for all other sports in 2005. Their official uniform colors are cardinal and silver, they are nicknamed Trojans, and their mascot is Trojan. Their home football games are played at the 30,000 capacity Movie Gallery Stadium, which is located in Troy, AL. The stadium was opened in 1950 and was known as Veterans Memorial Stadium, and is originally dedicated to the TSTC students and Pike County residents who had died in World War II. The stadium was expanded several times, including the addition of upper deck in 1998 that brought capacity up to 17,500, before the most recent renovation was carried out for completion in 2003. Troy University has fielded a football team continuously since 1946, and prior to that year, the team was fielded with only a few interruptions from 1909 to 1942.

Eight years were skipped due to lack of participation and later World War I from 1913-1920, while the Wall Street Crash of 1929 kept the team from playing that year. The team has competed in the NCAA's Division I since 2001, after moving from Division I-AA. They made their first bowl game appearance in the Silicon Valley Football Classic on December 30, 2004, but lost to Northern Illinois, 34-21, and recently won the Sun Belt Conference after beating out Middle Tennessee the 2006 season and played in the New Orleans Bowl on December 22, 2006 against Rice University, beating them 41-17, which was their first bowl victory. In 1968 troy won the NAIA national football championship in 1984 and 1987 the NCAA Division II national football championship.
