The Richmond Spiders are a college football team which is representing the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, and currently competes in the Colonial Athletic Association of the NCAA's Division I Football Championship Subdivision. On January 11, 2008, head coach Dave Clawson resigned to become the offensive coordinator for the University of Tennessee Volunteers.

On January 19, 2008 Mike London, defensive coordinator for the University of Virginia and former Richmond player, was named the Spiders' head coach. Jim Miller is the athletic director. They are playing their home games at the 21,319 capacity University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond, VA. Their traditional colors are richmond red and richmond blue. The Spiders advanced to the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals in 2007, before falling to two-time defending national champion Appalachian State.
Richmond's traditional rival in many sports is the College of William and Mary, and in football, since 1898, Richmond and William and Mary have met 117 times, making the rivalry which is sometimes referred to as "the South's oldest rivalry", the 4th most-played in Division I college football. Only Lafayette-Lehigh, Princeton-Yale, and Harvard-Yale have played more games. There are many Spider’s players in the NFL suck as Bruce Allen, Shawn Barber, Dave Ames, Joe Biscaha, Erik Christensen, Mike Bragg, Walker Gillette, Reggie Evans, Bruce Gossett and many others.
