About The Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes are Ohio State’s athletic teams and they all compete in the NCAA’s Division I; the football team competes in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Most sports compete in the Big Ten Conference. The school teams are called Buckeyes after the state tree. Brutus the Buckeye is the school’s mascot. Ohio State is one of just 3 universities to win national championships in baseball, men’s basketball and football; the other 2 are the University of Michigan and the University of California at Berkeley. They are also one of just 2 universities to appear in national championship games in both football and men’s basketball in the same calendar year; they lost both games to the University of Florida. Ohio State football players have gotten 7 Heisman Awards including the one 2-time winner Archie Griffin, who won in 1974 and 75, Eddie George in 1995 and Troy Smith in 2006.

The school has some Hall of Fame coaches like Paul Brown and Woody Hayes in football. The football team’s home games are played at Ohio Stadium, a.k.a. the Horseshoe or just the “Shoe.” They made an appearance at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl and won the college football national championship for 2002. That marked the 7th national championship for the school, which was also first in the nation in 1942, 54, 57, 61, 68 and 70. The team became the 2nd in the NCAA’s history, after Oklahoma, to lose back-to-back BCS National Championship games in the one-year history of the BCS; they lost to Florida in 2007 and LSU in 2008. Ohio State is part of the fierce Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. The University of Michigan leads the historical series, but Ohio State is 6-1 in the game since Jim Tressel started as head coach in 2001. This rivalry has been called the greatest rivalry in American sports by ESPN.
