The athletic teams of the “University of Houston” are known as the “Houston Cougars”. They are referred to as the Coogs, UH, or simply Houston in an informal way. The team joined the Conference USA as a part of the West Division, after the dissolution of the Southwest Conference in the year 1996. The official colors of the university are Scarlet red and Albino white. Kevin Sumlin currently coaches the team. The team began its first season in the year 1946 and now plays its home games at the on- campus Robertson Stadium in Houston.

About The Houston Cougars
Shasta is the mascot of the University of Houston athletics teams, the Houston Cougars. Shasta is a female cougar. Shasta is now a costumed mascot but earlier it was in the form of a live mascot.
The Spirit of Houston, also known as the Cougar Marching Band or a combination of the two names, is the marching band of the University of Houston.
Till now the team has won has won 10 conference championships and has had several inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame, including a Heisman Trophy winner.
The team has finished in the AP Poll and Coaches' Poll fifteen times in the program's history. The team's highest ranking was during the 1976 season, where the Cougars were ranked fourth.
Note: The AP Poll began in the year 1936 and the Coaches' Poll began in the year 1950. Before the year 1990, only the top 20 teams were ranked in the AP Poll.
