Boston College Eagles

Boston College is a Jesuit university that was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863 and opened on September 5, 1864 with 3 teachers and 22 students. It was exclusively a liberal arts school through its first 70 years; it placed an emphasis on the Greek and Latin classics, English and modern languages and philosophy and religion. It was originally located on Harrison Avenue in Boston’s South End, where it shared space with Boston College High School. >> More alt

It outgrew the urban setting, though, toward the end of its first 50 years; it was then moved to Chestnut Hill, on the site of the former Lawrence farm. Ground was broken on June 19, 1909 for the construction of Gasson Hall, which was known at the time as the Recitation Building. It opened in March 1913; three other buildings would form the campus core: St. Mary’s Hall, Devlin Hall and Bapst Library, which opened in 1917, 1924 and 1928, respectively.

On Saturday, August 30, 2008, the Kent State Golden Flashes will take on the Boston College Eagles at Cleveland Browns Stadium in the 2nd annual FirstMerit Patriot Bowl. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 PM. The FirstMerit Patriot Bowl is an event of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. Around the football game will be patriotic, civic events, which includes a free tailgate party on West 6th Street in downtown Cleveland, a high school band showcase, an engaging halftime show and a salute to WWII veterans. Boston College will go into the game with an eager group of new and old faces. The Eagles will bring in a new signal-caller, the replacement of 2007 ACC Player of the Year, Matt Ryan. Even though there will be a new leader, the 2008 Eagles will have experienced wide receivers and offensive producers; 14 starters from the 2007 team will return including All-ACC first-team tight end Ryan Purvis. The team will be led by 2nd-year head coach Jeff Jagodzinski, who led last fall’s team to an 11-3 record, which included a victory over Michigan State in the Champ Sports Bowl. The win was the program’s 8th consecutive bowl victory and allowed them to end the season ranked # 10 in the AP Poll.

Boston College quarterback, Matt Ryan, who received the Johnny Unitas and Manning Awards, was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons as the 3rd pick on the 2008 NFL Draft; he became BC’s highest draft pick ever. Later, the Detroit Tigers drafted offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus; he was the 17th overall pick. This marked the 9th consecutive year a BC offensive lineman was drafted and only the 2nd time in BC’s football history that 2 players were drafted in the 1st round. Ryan ended his BC career 3rd on the all-time passing yardage list with 9,313 yards. He also set a single-season record for passing yarage with 4,507 yards passed. The next day, cornerback DeJuan Tribble became the 3rd BC Eagle chosen in the 2008 NFL Draft; the San Diego Chargers selected him as the 26th selection in the 6th round. Tribble now joins Ryan and Cherilus, who were both chosen in the 1st round. Tribble, a Cincinnati, OH native, earned All-ACC second-team honors for the 2nd season in a row in 2007. He started 37 career games for the Eagles.
