Recently the Bears have been dogged by scandal, tragedy and crippling sanctions that many saw as being insurmountable. Not only was one of their star players Patrick Dennehy murdered by his own teammate, the incident was allegedly covered up by then-coach David Bliss. Further inquiries into the affair uncovered a number of indiscretions and violations of NCAA rules. This scandal came close on the heels of another scandal that had involved allegations of fraud by Baylor recruits.
Accordingly, the Bears were slapped with a debilitating order restricting them from playing non-conference games. Coach Drew fully expected a stiff sentence and did his best to try and ready the team in other ways, even resorting to the longest preseason practice session in NCAA history. Unfortunately the team still could not cut it but the experience proved to be an important one. The team has steadily improved, bringing their most inspired playing this season to the fore. Coach Drew's dynamic leadership has also earned him much international respect as one of the best recruiters around.
