Phoenix, Arizona was incorporated on February 25, 1881 and is the sixth largest city in the United States. The early economy of Phoenix was primarily agricultural dependent mainly on cotton and citrus farming. The economy has become much more diversified as fast as the population grows. Many internet companies are making Phoenix their homes because of the low cost of living along with the amount of applicants. Currently Phoenix is the home to electronics company Avnet, Apollo Group, Freeport McMoRan, operations of Honeywell, Intel, American Express, Allied Waste services and U-Haul.
Nine major league baseball teams conduct their spring training in Phoenix because of the warm weather. These teams, known as the Cactus League, are Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. Phoenix is the largest North American city that does have a professional soccer team.
Phoenix is the largest city in the United States that does not operate a downtown intercity passenger rail service. Phoenix has numerous freeways and expressways throughout the city. These freeways are funded by local sales tax dollars so newer freeways are given state designation rather than Interstate designation. It is the largest city in the United States to have no 3-digit Interstates.
The temperature in Phoenix is one reason for the amount of tourism the city brings. The average lowest temperature is 43 degrees Fahrenheit in January and the highest is 102 degrees Fahrenheit in June and July. Many tourists travel to Phoenix for the beautiful golf and scenery. The resorts are all well maintained and many have multiple golf courses and spas on the grounds. The view of the mountains is adds to the reasons why people visit Phoenix.
Phoenix is along with most of Arizona does not observe daylight savings time. This was due to conserving energy use and children going to school in the dark. The only part of Arizona that observes daylight savings time is the Navajo Nation in Northeastern Arizona to observe in conjunction with the rest of their tribal lands in other states.
