The city is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the fifth largest city in the United States. Philadelphia served as the first capital of the United States. About Philadelphia

The typical housing structure in Philadelphia is the row house which was introduced in the 1800s to the United States via the city. In any other city in the United States that have row houses they are called “Philadelphia Rows.”

The culture of Philadelphia is very historic as it relates to the founding of the United States. As a tourist in Philadelphia you can find the Independence National Historical Park, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, homes of Edgar Allan Poe and Betsy Ross and the early government buildings like the First and Second Banks of the United States. Another fun tourist spot is the stairs in which Rocky ran up in the movie Rocky. You can find a statue located at the site.

Philadelphia is known for its hoagies, soft pretzels, water ice and it is the home of the cheese steak. In all other cities you must call it a Philly cheese steak but in Philadelphia you just walk up and order a cheese steak. Water ice is also referred to as Italian ice – which consists of crushed ice and concentrated syrup flavoring. A hoagie consists of an elongated roll with a selection of cold luncheon meats and condiments. Just like all other cities the competition is high and everyone has their own opinion of where they can find the best.

Philadelphia has a long history of professional sports teams, and is one of thirteen U.S. cities to have all four major sports: the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League, the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League of Major League Baseball, and the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association. The last major professional sport team to win a championship was the 76ers, which won the NBA Championship in 1983.

The following institutions call Philadelphia home and were first founded in the city; fire insurance company, botanical garden, public library, hospital, fire engine, fire company, medical school, pediatric hospital, cancer hospital, eye hospital, university, art school & Museum, municipal water system, post office, bank, stock exchange, mint, zoo, computer and modernist skyscraper in North American. Philadelphia’s road uses what they call a turnpike. When you are driving and enter the turnpike you receive a card, on that card it lists all the exists and the toll it is to get off the turnpike. When you get to your exist you show your card and pay the appropriate toll. Four bridges operate in Philadelphia across the Delaware River to New Jersey; Walt Whitman Bridge, Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Betsy Ross Bridge and Commodore Barry Bridge.
