London

London is the largest urban area and capital of England and the United Kingdom. As of the middle of 2006 the population of London was 7,512,400 with a wide range of people, cultures, religions and over 300 languages spoken within the city. London serves as an international hub with five major international airports serving the area and a large port. It serves as the largest aviation hub in the world. The entertainment district of the West End, primarily the city of Westminster, has its focus around Leicester Square, where London and the world film premieres are held, and Piccadilly Circus, with its giant electronic advertisements. In the same area you can also find London’s theatre district, many cinemas, bars, clubs and restaurants, including Chinatown district, and just to the east is Covent Garden, an area housing specialty shops. In the East End (Shoreditch and Hoxton) you can find bars, nightclubs, restaurants and galleries. Islington’s one mile long Upper Street has more bars and restaurants than any other UK street.

London is one of the major classical and popular music capitals of the world and is home to major music companies such as EMI and Decca Records. The city is home to many orchestra and concert halls. The London Symphony Orchestra performs at the Barbican Arts Centre; the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs at Cadogan Hall; BBC Promenade concerts perform at the Royal Albert Hall; the Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and London Sinfonietta perform at Royal Festival Hall. The two min opera houses are the Royal Opera House and the Coliseum Theatre.

London has hosted the Summer Olympics in 1908 and 1948. London was chosen to host the 2012 summer Olympics which will make it the first city in the world to host the Summer Olympics three times. The most popular sport in London is football with thirteen League football clubs.
