According to the 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of Boise was 198,638 people. Its metropolitan area estimated to have 635,450 inhabitants that made it one of the most populous metropolitan cities in Idaho.
Boise is located in the southwestern Idaho at approximately 66 km east of Oregon and 180 km north of the Nevada borders respectively. Its downtown core is at an elevation of 2,704 feet above the sea level.
Almost entire metropolitan area of Boise lies on a relatively flat plain and widespread area. The mountains rise up to the northeast stretching from southeastern tip of the city to the nearby Eagle – they are famous as the Boise foothills. These mountains are most often described foothills of Rocky Mountains. The entire Owyhee Mountains lie in the neighboring Owyhee County that is about 55 km southwest of Boise and 42 km southwest of Nampa respectively.
The United States Census Bureau estimates that Boise has a total area of 64.0 mi². Out of this 63.8 mi² is the land area and 0.2 mi² is water.
The climate of Boise is semi-arid with its four distinct and peculiar seasons. This city has hot and dry summers. Its temperatures exceed to 100 °F (38 °C) in the summers. This city encounters cold winters with enough snowfall. The rainfall is usually infrequent and light. They average to 1 inch (25 mm) per month.
Boise has its wettest month in March with an average of 1.41 inches (36 mm), whereas August is driest with 0.30 inches (7.6 mm) of rain.
