Oakland County was divided into two townships on June 28, 1820. They were Pontiac Township, Michigan and Bloomfield Township that covered the southern part of the county including West Bloomfield Township, Royal Oak and Southfield. Bloomfield Hills was a farming area until 20th Century. It turned into a village later. Its residents voted to turn it into a city to avoid being incorporated into growing Birmingham.
Bloomfield Hills School District is a renowned public school of Bloomfield Hills. The city also has an International Academy, a tuition-free and a public consortium high school that offers IB Diploma Programmes. The school is rated amongst the top ten public high schools in the United States by Newsweek magazine.
This city is home to the Cranbrook Educational Community, Academy of the Sacred Heart, as well as The Roeper School, St Hugo's of the hills and Brother Rice and Marian High School.

Its population density is 796.4 per square mile (307.3/km²), and the housing units are 1,628 at an average density of 329.1/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 90.69% Whites, 1.65% Blacks, 0.10% Native Americans, 6.57% Asians, 0.25% from other races and 0.74% from two or more races. Its Hispanic or Latino race consists of 1.09% of the entire population.
Bloomfield Hills has 1,520 households, out of which 26.2% has children under the age of 18 living with them, out of which 71.9% are married who live together and 3.2% has a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% are non-families.
