Bladensburg was a seaport during the colonial period. It was remembered for the Battle of Bladensburg in 1814, particularly during the War of 1812 that cleared ways for destroying Washington by the British troops. Its seaport was later abandoned when the Anacostia River silted up and the bigger ships could not reach the port.
Bladensburg, Colmar Manor and Cottage City were designed by the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities for their collaboration with Prince George's County for the Port Towns Revitalization Initiative of 1999. They developed common Port Towns identity for the towns and emphasized businesses development through various infrastructures. It also helped in acquisitioning of the historic leftovers, and planned for reusing them reconstruction of Bladensburg waterfront and marina.

Its racial makeup is 16.42% White, 70.92% African American, 0.34% Native American, 2.52% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 6.87% from other races and 2.88% from two or more races. The population of Hispanic or Latino race consists of 13.07%.
Bladensburg has 3,121 households, of which 31.0% has children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.8% are married couples living together, 20.7% has a female householder with no husband present and 44.9% are non-families.
