‘Bismarck’ was founded in 1872 as Edwinton to honour a chief engineer of the Northern Pacific Railway Company, Edwin M. Johnson. This city was renamed to Bismarck in 1873 to honour German chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. This was done in an effort to inspire the German immigrants to settle here. The twin cities make the core urban area of Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area. This city is hub of healthcare, manufacturing and retail trade.
