Kronk Boxing is a renowned boxing club that started off to produce the national and international talents to gain name and fame in the boxing ring.
The club has been witnessing triumphs and tragedies of the Kronk fighters and promoters. Meanwhile, there was a name that came out of this arena to gain international applause owing to his sheer determination and perseverance. This man was no one else but Emanuel Steward who in 1963 won the National Golden Gloves bantamweight championship.
Later on, in the year 1970, he trained his kid brother James at Kronk Recreation Center. Under his guidance, James also wins Detroit Golden Gloves title. At this piece of time, Kronk team was born. Again in 1974, the two winners were Bernard Mays and Dwaine Bonds who won national AAU titles.

Thereafter, there came the year 1977 when Thomas Hearns won the national Golden Gloves. There was a series going on. In the year 1980, Hilmer Kenty became a lightweight champion of the world. He also became the Kronk’s first pro titlist by defeating Ernesto Espana in the new Joe Louis Arena. In the same year that is 1980, Thomas Hearns won his first world title, while knocking out Jose Cuevas in the second round at Cobo Arena. This achievement was for the World Boxing Association welterweight championship.
Thereafter in 1982, Hearns won World Boxing Congress junior middleweight title from Wilfred Benitez. Again in 1983, William ‘Caveman’ Lee, who fought Marvin Hagler for the middleweight championship only a year earlier, lost by a knockout in 67 seconds. However, this fellow is also known for a different story as he had robbed a bank in Detroit and had gone to prison for three years. Again in the year 1983, Leslie ‘Lemonade’ Gardner, 26, came into media light. He had a mistaken belief that he is being tailed by police. He swallowed drugs that he had in his car. He had the overdoses that made him crash and he dies there itself.
Again in the year 1987, Hearns won WBC light-heavyweight title in victory over Dennis Andries. In the same year, Hearns defeated Juan Roldan for WBC middleweight crown. In the year 1988, Hearns also won the World Boxing Organisation super middleweight title from James Kinchen. Then came the year 1991. Here, Hearns defeated Virgil Hill for WBA light-heavyweight crown. The year 1994 came up as a bad year as Bernard “Superbad” Mays died merely at the age of 33. 1996 saw Emanuel Steward being inducted into Boxing Hall of Fame. Then, in 1999, Steward-trained Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield — who also was formerly trained at Kronk for undisputed heavyweight championship of world. 1999 saw Hearns winning his last world title and defeating Nate Miller for International Boxing Organisation cruiserweight belt.
In June 2000 Duane Thomas, 39, former super-welterweight champion and a Kronk original, was murdered at the sidewalk on the outside an east-side party store. He had shot in the base of the skull, the chest, forearm, hip, thigh and flank by a 9mm gun. Although police described it as a drug dispute, there was an autopsy that traced drugs in Thomas’ system. The other remarkable occasion in Kronk Boxing Club’s history was on Feb. 6, 2001 when there was a formal opening of Kronk Gym branch in London. Here, Steward pledged to produce Olympic champions for Britain.
