Art Davie was an advertising executive from southern California in 1991 researching martial arts for a client when he came across a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school run by Rorion Gracie. Impressed by what he saw and intrigued by the no hold bar fighting tournaments hosted by Rorion, Davie joined the school and began working with Gracie to market his competitions for the public for what would eventually become known as the UFC.

Davie set up a competition that pitted martial arts masters of all kinds of disciplines and seasoned fighters against the Gracie school. In 1993, the eight-man tournament was produced by the newly formed WOW Promotions in Denver, with Royce Gracie representing the Gracie school. Royce’s victory against fighters of every skill set, regardless of size, was a huge hit with fighting fans that purchased tickets tot eh then ground breaking tournament.

Since then, UFC has changed in face of threatened bans from state and federal governments, becoming sanctioned with fight commissioned in most states. The league has also changed hands, growing from the up-and-coming project from WOW Promotions to an established event for Zuffa, LLC in 2001 that took the UFC from pay-per-view bouts to a cable-televised format that has fostered a huge national following.
