Ricky Hatton tried out for the football team his father and his grandfather played for, Rochdale, but found that his quickness and his toughness better suited him for a place in a tiny canvas ring where he would become destined to the greatest hope for British boxing in 20 years. Hatton began by finding a place to train, at the local boxing club in Hyde. Now Hatton is the biggest draw for boxing tickets in the United Kingdom, a title once held by Canadian Lennox Lewis.

The pint-sized pit bull may not tower over his opponents (5 foot 6) or have much of a reach (65 inches), but he does pack a wallop into every body blow he uses to wear down opponents. He has wavered between welterweight and light welterweight his entire professional career, collecting titles from the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBU, WBC, and Ring Magazine.
His first fight was knock out in the first round of his match with Colin McAuley at the Kingsway Leisure Centre, and his path to glory seem predestined after his second fight sold tickets at the Mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden. Since then he has gone 45-1 with 32 knock outs. His last fight was his first loss. The tickets to the Hatton-Mayweather Jr. fight were huge as Hatton tried to emerge as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Mayweather won and Hatton’s dreams seemed dashed, but now he will get a second chance to rise to the top with a fight against the new best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Manny Pacquino. Pacquino has put the Philippines on the boxing map with wins against Juan Manuel Marquez, David Diaz, and Oscar De Lay Hoya.
