Sometimes it seems like every aspect of our culture rewards greedy brats. I think that trying to teach children to be respectful adults might actually be a detriment to their adult lives. We bail out a banking industry with billions after that cost millions their retirement portfolio. We offer reality shows to rich kids who do absolutely nothing and put them on covers of magazines. We even reward players who act ridiculously with multi-millionaire contracts.
This week two of those players are coming close to near $20 million dollar deals. Stephon Marbury is close to getting his buyout after spending the better part of the season crying to the media and stalking his teammates. Manny Ramirez is being offered another ludicrous contract for a son to be 37-year-old athlete.
The New York Knicks held out and let the box scores fill with DNPs when Marbury said he would accept a buyout for a mere $1 million dollars off his contract. The key here is that his contract for this season put him at $20.8 million for the season.
I cannot blame Marbury for not wanting to opt out without getting most of that money back, but when it is obvious that management is not willing to come close to your demands it is not professional to show up court side and talk on your cell phone the entire game while your team is struggling.
Stay away and accept your checks. I am pretty sure that the Knicks would not have been suspending pay if he had not acting like a jealous high school girl who just got dumped for another cheerleader.
If Marbury really wanted to play for a championship to save his pretty disappointing legacy he should have been prepared to take much less. Now, he is close to a deal that will set him free and let him sign with the Boston Celtics to win a championship. I think that his signing will only ensure the Cleveland Cavaliers the East though.
Going from the hardcourt to the diamond, Manny Ramirez has been presented with his third offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers feel that they need him to win the NL West again. They just are not willing to give Ramirez a four-year, $100 million contract.
Is Scott Boras not informing Ramirez that the two-year deal for $45 million and the one-year deal for $25 million were not bad when considering how many other sluggers were settling for one year stints. Unfortunately the Dodgers were so intent on resigning the player that saved them last year that they passed on signing a couple guys who, combined, could make up for Manny’s production.
Boras keeps floating this mystery team that is offering Ramirez something close to his ridiculous request. At some point in time somebody talk to Ramirez alone and tell him that he is approaching 40 and that he has made more than $160 million over his career. Perhaps it is time to consider a decent offer.
I hope for the Dodgers sake that Ramirez takes this latest offer. It is a two-year deal with the first year guaranteed at $25 million and a second year as a payer option worth $20 million. Ramirez may have helped the Boston Red Sox end their curse and help continually punish the New York Yankees, but he has worn out his welcome and simply does not know it.
