The Grammy Throwback: Rihanna, Whitney, and the Rap Pack

Assuming the rumors are true, Rihanna needs to leave Chris Brown before he goes all Bobby and ruins her career and her emotional well being. It’s too bad that Rihanna missed her performance at the Grammy’s. She could have peered into the future and watched Whitney Houston while she presented Jennifer Hudson’s win for best Debut Album. She looked “clean” if clean meant visibly shaking and talking as if she was trying to restrain herself from screaming into the microphone.

Houston performed earlier in the day at the 2009 Grammy Salute where she sang “I’m Every Woman” and “I Will Always Love You” in another attempt to make a comeback. Whitney is every woman that has stayed in an abusive relationship because she cannot help but always love Bobby Brown. Her desperation led her to crack-cocaine and has pretty much shattered her life. Her PR person is still trying to put his whole comeback thing in heavy rotation. I see this ending up like Britney Spears and her ill-fated 2007 The M+M’s Tour.

In other Grammy news, Katy Perry did her best to push her purposely flighty image by descending the stage in a fruit basket to sing “I Kissed a Girl”. I do have to give her props for trying to actually sing the song on stage instead of lip syncing. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss took five albums, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Plant’s decision to rebuke his role in the Led Zeppelin reunion appears to be a good one.

Lil’ Wayne replaced Kayne West as white people’s favorite hip hop artist with Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Solo Performance (is there any such thing anymore), and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Then Wayne performed with the egomaniac and several other hip hop brand names in the Rap Pack.

Jay-Z (Frank), Kanye (Dean), Lil Wayne (Joey Bishop), T.I. (?) and a very preggers M.I.A. (Peter Lawford because she was raised in Britain) performed “Swagga Like Us.” They sounded alright, but need to work on their timing and add a comedy routine if they want to take the show to the Vegas Strip. I am wondering who gets to be the token white guy in the Sammy Davis Jr. role reversal. I think Justin Timberlake would make the most sense. He is accepted by the hip hop and the pop community, though maybe Eminem is a most realistic choice since he has a much sharper edge then Timberlake.

While the Rap Pack seemed like a cohesive pairing for the most part, the most awkward pairing of the night was the Jonas Brothers with Stevie Wonder. It hurts as a child of the ‘80s to see Stevie forced to backup the latest Disney Boy Band, but I guess that is simply a sign of the changing times. Alas, now that the 2009 Grammy Show is over we will have to wait another year to see such a massive collection of musical talent and high profile disasters.
