Fashionistas, celebrity news show segment producers, and now a video company are making Jessica Simpson’s latest tour Hell on Earth. Fashion experts (plus wannabe experts working at Kohls) and the E! channel have spent the week talking about the drawbacks of trying to bring back high-waisted jeans from the 1980s, seemingly excessive weight gain, and rumors of an All Pro quarterback boyfriend cheating with the closest skanky blonde chick in every tabloid picture.
Just to top off the emotionally-crippling week, the owner of the fitness company SpeedFit is suing Simpson for $10 million for a breach of contract because her manager/father/Joe Jackson protégé Joe Simpson did not sign off on the release of the video. Jessica allegedly showed up to the set drunk and Father Joe wanted to protect his daughter’s personal reputation…and her celebrity image as America’s Sweetheart.
Alex Astilean, president of SpeedFit, said he has given her the chance to come back and re-shoot the video, but that she has yet to return. In my cynical mind Astilean sat on this grievance and thought that following through with the lawsuit now, when Simpson is far from her booty-short wearing body from her role as Daisy Duke, would serve him best.
Women across the nation are coming to her defense, much like they did when Britney Spears showed up at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2007 and looked unfit and ill prepared. Simpson may be trying to move away from “performing artist” and to embrace a country singer persona, but the world still sees her looks and her sound as the same.
The sad part is that people will justify this attack because Jessica was once a pop star. She was never that kind of a pop star though. Performers like Lady Gaga use the marriage of fashion, looks, and music to propel their careers, but Simpson always tried to identify with the girl next door. She may have been drop dead gorgeous (blonde, impossibly skinny, and big bosomed), but she did not try and push a fashion label and a music label.
She can only hope that over the course of the “Bob That Head Tour” that she is able to win enough fans over with tearful lyrics and get them to see beyond her wardrobe choices.
