It seemed like 2008 was the year of the teenyboppers. Well, 2009 is shaping up to be a little more adult. Jay-Z last released American Gangster in 2007 and his next record, The Blue Print 3, is going to be his 11th and last with Island Def Jam. Eminem is coming back with Relapse, his first new release since Encore in 2004.

The recognized statesmen and women of hip hop and rap found inspiration apparently. Was it that they were sick of listening to Kanye try and sing or was Lil’ Wayne pantomiming with instruments just to look cool? I do not know, but I cannot wait to listen to Missy Elliot, or catch her latest video for Block Party.

It is not all hip hop. Soul has its lady back with Erykah Badu set to promote New Amerykah, Part 2: Return of Ankh. She has been busy with motherhood, but ahs found some time to remind us all that sometimes music can have some deeper meaning.

The rumors are afloat that Dr. Dre is going to release Detox, but I suspect that we will here the same rumors in 2010 and 2011. Meanwhile, the pop world is preparing for Kelly Clarkson to return with a new album closer to 2004’s Breakaway rather than 2007’s My December.
