The new rumor around Popville is that ballad happy Coldplay could be further ruining their sincerity cred here in the States thanks to the willingness of Chris Martin to perform in a duo for Leona Lewis. Casual pop fans may not recognize the name, but Lewis is the Kelly Clarkson of the UK. She is the winner of the 2006 season of the British pop wannabe competition Factor X. She has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards and debuted at number one over here with her album Spirit.

While Coldplay is far from iconic status and has drifted closer and closer to pop mockdom with each Rolling Stone cover, this may be the nail in the coffin that ends the love from even the most ardent Anglophiles. Yes Coldplay tickets and Coldplay albums will still top the charts, but everyone worldwide would accept the fact that the British band is not as transcendent as the Beatles.

It is in the movie Batman: The Dark Knight that perhaps the most appropriate line is found. Harvey Dent talks about the caped crusader and says (yeah movie trailers on youtube):

Well Coldplay has long survived and has gone from the band to rescue us from bad emo rock to the pop villain that will probably swarm us in a mediocre melody for as long as the band mates can stand each other.
