Four weeks remain until the end of the NFL season and while half of the divisions already have clear champions (the NFC East, NFC West, AFC South, and AFC West) the remaining divisions are beginning the dog fight for first place.
The biggest game of the 14th Week of the NFL Season is the Monday Night Game for perhaps the first time this season. The game used to be the showcase of the week, but has fallen so far as to be shown on cable instead in network primetime. This week the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the Carolina Panthers in the battle for first place in the NFC South.
Each team is 9-3, but the Bucs have the season advantage with a 27-3 decimation of the Panthers back in Week 6. The Bucs and the Panthers have veteran quarterbacks who have made the coaches look good and both have a dual backfield that has helped create a balanced offense. While the Panthers may be a little better offensively, the Bucs are a better defensive team. With the game in Carolina at Bank of America Stadium I have to give the Panthers the edge because of home field advantage and the revenge factor.
The NFL front office must be salivating over the Dallas Cowboys-Pittsburgh Steelers game. Two signature franchises, both potential playoff-bound teams, what could be better?
This game raises many questions. Who will show up? The Romo with the league’s highest quarterback rating or the Romo that has thrown wins a way show. Will Ben Roethlisberger look like he is standing on his last leg again or will he prove why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL? Will the vaunted Pittsburgh D be able to contain he explosive Dallas O? Will the Pittsburgh O be able to take advantage of a soft Dallas D? How soon until Jerry Jones is on the field calling plays?
This week has a few other buzz-worthy games, mainly the Philly-New York game and the Washington-Baltimore game, but it mostly a chance for teams to get easy wins against teams that prove the NFL is no longer the best example of parity in sports.
